I am so excited you’ll be attending the Mosaic Garden Pole class Sept 13-15 at the Art Center Morro Bay.

My hope is for you to finish your garden pole during the weekend but that depends on your skill level and the detail you desire. If you do not complete your project during the weekend, I will walk the group through the grouting process and you will be sent home with instructions and a kit to complete your pole.

The area you will be mosaicing is 36” x 16” so keep that in mind when setting your goals for the weekend. The pole measures 49” tall by 4” on each side. Note that 12” of the length will be underground and 1” at the top is to place the solar light. These areas will be left blank. See photo A.

A solar light topper will be included in the kit. See photo to the right. The one shown in completed photos is not available.

To get your creative juices flowing and to have an idea of what you’d like to create, I will be sending a future email with diagrams where you can pencil-in your design. Along with the diagrams, I’ll also include flower examples, number included in your kit and sizes. You can just wing it during the weekend but coming in with at least a general idea helps to get you started faster. You’ll be surprised how fast the time goes.​

Hours for the class are: Friday – 4:00 to 7:00, Saturday – 9:00 to 7:00 and Sunday – 9:00 to 2:00. You are encouraged to take breaks, step-out to eat, get some caffeine and enjoy some fresh air. You do not have to stay the entire hours designated.  As the time gets closer, I’ll send some recommendations for coffee houses, shopping and other Morro Bay break ideas. Light snacks and water will be provided.


You will receive a kit at your station that includes:

  • Vinyl pole (49” x 4”)
  • Sandpaper
  • 1 large tube of clear silicone
  • Paper plates for silicone (you’ll be brushing silicone on back of pieces)
  • Baby wipes
  • Ceramic pieces (some colors and flowers may vary depending on supply) If more ceramic pieces are desired, some will be for sale at the workshop (I’m in the process of making leaves and flowers so specific items your kit will include will be available later this summer)
  • Brushes to apply silicone
  • Solar light topper
  • Grout, white with optional additive colors - choice of blue, yellow, rose or brick red
  • Cleaning cloths
  • Background tile, white
  • Gloves


During class you will have use of:

  • Wheeled nippers
  • Cutting container
  • Glass cutter
  • Ruler
  • Tweezers
  • Paper for design
  • Hammer
  • Blue tape to hold pieces
  • Scissors
  • Markers
  • E6000 Glue for dimensional pieces
  • Some sheets of stained glass


It is recommended you bring goggles.

Feel free to bring your own items to personalize your garden pole. Metal not recommended due to rust. You can always send Joan a picture of the items you’re thinking of using to make sure they will work. joanmartinfee@gmail.com

In the workshop we’ll cover how to:

  • Cut tiles and glass
  • Glue
  • Clean-up
  • Grout
  • Seal (at home after a few days of drying)
  • ‘Plant’ your finished pole


REFUND POLICY

A LOT OF EFFORT GOES INTO HOLDING THIS CLASS, NOT ONLY THE CUSTOM MADE AND PURCHASED CERAMIC PIECES THAT REQUIRE TWO GLAZINGS AND FIRINGS BUT ALSO SOURCING AND PURCHASING ALL THE NEEDED SUPPLIES.​

Refund of deposit (or full payment depending on amount paid) will only be granted 30 days or more prior to the workshop (August 13, 2024).

30 days or less before the workshop, no refund will be made, but feel free to gift your space to a family member or friend.

Cost of class is $275. Final payment is due on or before August 1st. You can pay using Venmo - @Joan-Fee-1 or I can send you an invoice via PayPal so you can use your credit card. If payment is not received by August 5, Joan will contact you and you have until August 13th to make final payment or the deposit is forfeited and your space will go to the next person on the wait list.
